Still, both 401(k) and IRA balances were up year over year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The majority of retirement savers continue to contribute, Fidelity said. The average 401(k) contribution rate, including employer and employee contributions, increased to 14.3%, just shy of Fidelity&#8217;s suggested savings rate of 15%.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although the first quarter of 2025 posed challenges for retirement savers, it&#8217;s encouraging to see people take a continuous savings approach which focuses on their long-term retirement goals,&#8221; Sharon Brovelli, president of workplace investing at Fidelity Investments, said in a statement. &#8220;This approach will help individuals weather any type of market turmoil and stay on track.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"SpecialReportArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 class=\"RelatedContent-header\">More from FA Playbook:<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Here&#8217;s a look at other stories affecting the financial advisor business.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>U.S. markets have been under pressure ever since the White House first announced country-specific tariffs on April 2.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and European Union as well as China, largely due to\u00a0President Donald Trump&#8217;s on-again, off-again negotiations, caused some of the worst trading days for the\u00a0<span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"SpecialReportArticle-QuoteInBody-9\">S&amp;P 500<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> since the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>However, more recently, markets largely rebounded from earlier losses. As of Wednesday morning, the\u00a0Dow Jones Industrial Average\u00a0was roughly flat year to date, while the\u00a0<span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"SpecialReportArticle-QuoteInBody-11\">Nasdaq Composite<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> and S&amp;P 500 were up around 1% in 2025.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\">&#8216;Have a long-term strategy&#8217;<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s important to not get too unnerved by market swings,&#8221; said Mike Shamrell, Fidelity&#8217;s vice president of thought leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Even for those nearing retirement age, those savings should have a time horizon of at least 10 to 20 years, he said, which means it&#8217;s better to &#8220;have a long-term strategy and not a short-term reaction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Intervening, or trying to time the market, is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/10\/02\/cnbcs-no-1-advisor-has-a-golden-rule-we-do-not-time-the-market.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">almost always a bad idea, said Gil Baumgarten,\u00a0founder and CEO of Segment Wealth Management in Houston.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People lose sight of the long-term benefits of investing in volatile assets, they stay focused on short-term market movements, and had they stayed put, the market would have corrected itself,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The math is so compelling to look past all that and let the stock market work itself out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>For example,\u00a0the 10 best trading days\u00a0by percentage gain for the S&amp;P 500 over the past three decades all occurred during recessions, often in close proximity to the worst days, according to a Wells Fargo analysis published last year.<\/p>\n<p>And, although stocks go up and down, the\u00a0S&amp;P 500\u00a0index has an average annualized return of\u00a0more than 10%\u00a0over the past few decades.
