The small-cap Russell 2000 jumped 2%, reaching another record closing high on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>More volatility could be in store in the week ahead as investors assess the outlook for the economy, inflation, interest rates and corporate earnings amid ongoing trade and geopolitical tensions.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump said on Saturday that eight NATO members will face escalating tariffs of up to 25%, unless a deal is struck for the U.S. buying Greenland.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. markets will be closed Monday for observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. On the economic calendar, most important will be Thursday\u2019s core PCE price index, which is the Fed\u2019s favorite inflation gauge.<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Weekly Economic Events\" src=\"https:\/\/d1-invdn-com.investing.com\/content\/930491554d15df76c6da135c7c5e43be.png\" alt=\"Weekly Economic Events\" width=\"\" height=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Investing.com<\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the fourth quarter earnings season shifts into high gear, with reports expected from several high-profile companies, including Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX), Intel (NASDAQ:INTC),  (NASDAQ:UAL), Procter &amp; Gamble (NYSE:PG), Johnson &amp; Johnson (NYSE:JNJ),  (NYSE:GE), and 3M Company (NYSE:MMM).<\/p>\n<p>Investors are also waiting for the U.S. Supreme Court to issue a ruling on the legality of President Trump\u2019s global tariffs after not doing so last week. The court will also hear arguments over Trump\u2019s attempt to remove Fed Governor Lisa Cook.<\/p>\n<p>And finally, news is also likely to roll out of Davos, Switzerland, where Trump is set to attend the World Economic Forum.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Regardless of which direction the market goes, below I highlight one stock likely to be in demand and another which could see fresh downside.\u00a0Remember though, my timeframe is <em>just<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>for the week ahead, Monday, January 19 &#8211; Friday, Jan. 23.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Stock To Buy: GE Aerospace<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/Corporation\"><span itemprop=\"name\">GE Aerospace<\/span><\/span> reports earnings this week with expectations pointing to another solid quarter. Analysts anticipate strong results, driven by surging aerospace demand and a fresh round of engine orders (Delta just tapped GE\u2019s GEnx for its new 787 fleet).<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s Q4 update is scheduled to come out before the market opens on Thursday at 6:30AM ET. Market participants expect a sharp swing in GE stock following the print, with options markets pricing in a potential move of +\/-5.2% in either direction post-earnings.<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"GE Aerospace Earnings\" src=\"https:\/\/d1-invdn-com.investing.com\/content\/17bc79363eacee9277fd6c5c15ba6f1e.png\" alt=\"GE Aerospace Earnings\" width=\"\" height=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: InvestingPro<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Analysts expect solid results, with consensus calling for adjusted EPS of $1.44 (up from $1.32 in the prior year) and revenue growth of around 13% year-over-year to $11.2 billion, fuelled by structural tailwinds like high demand for LEAP and GEnx engines (sold out through the decade) and increasing engine deliveries.<\/p>\n<p>Investors will be closely watching GE\u2019s guidance as much as the headline results. While the airline has shown resilience in prior quarters, consensus points to challenges that could lead to a miss or muted reaction.<\/p>\n<p>With implied volatility pointing to a +\/-5.9% stock move in either direction for UAL post-earnings, the risk of a miss looms large.<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"United Airlines Earnings\" src=\"https:\/\/d1-invdn-com.investing.com\/content\/e6ff3d5c027160c333b70e08b0081364.png\" alt=\"United Airlines Earnings\" width=\"\" height=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: InvestingPro<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Wall Street sees the Chicago-based airliner earning $2.96 a share, a decline of 9.2% from last year\u2019s EPS of $3.26.
